Yoga Therapy and Meditation Training

Trauma-informed yoga is based on a particular understanding of trauma, one that emphasizes its impact on the entire mind-body system, as opposed to particular mental states (e.g., troubling memories) viewed in isolation from the physical body. “Trauma,” Bessel van der Kolk explains, “is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on mind, brain, and body.”

Drawing from neuroscience, developmental psychology, and interpersonal neurobiology, this view of trauma considers body-based therapeuticmethods, such as trauma-informed yoga and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), to be at least equal in importance to more traditional therapies, like talk therapy.

Eye Movement Desentitization and Repreocessing (EMDR)

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

EMDR is a proven treatment that enables people to consciously and sub-conciously access, process and dispel the negative associations and behaviors associated with trauma. It uses rapid sensory stimulation, like eye movement, tactile tapping and sound tracking, as you privately work through your memories and experiences. EMDR breaks down and breaks through the negative thoughts and feelings held deep in your mind - and creates new associations and neural connections. Processing the past and releasing these blockages allows you to heal from the emotional distress and learn new coping mechanisms  for more productive, positive living.

Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. In fact, the Department of Defense/Department of Veterans Affairs Practice Guidelines have placed EMDR in the highest category, recommended for all trauma populations at all times. In addition, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies current treatment guidelines have designated EMDR as an effective treatment for PTSD (Foa, Keane, Friedman, & Cohen, 2009)

 

EMDR success has proven that the mind can indeed heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. Once the wound is treated and healed, healthy function can resume. Life can get better.
